Glendurgan National Trust
Glendurgan is situated at Mawnan Smith near Falmouth. It overlooks the Helford River, filling a steep sheltered valley. Glendurgan is probably most famous locally for its 'Cherry Laurel maze' created by Alfred Fox in 1833 and recently restored.. March 26, 1602 The Concord of Dartmouth departed Falmouth, England, reaching Maine and Massachusetts .. Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, (died 1607), English explorer and colonizer. In 1602 he was in command of the ship Concord, which sailed along the North American coast from Maine to Narragansett Bay. On that voyage he named Cape Cod, some of the islands in Nantucket Sound, including Martha's Vineyard, and the Elizabeth Islands. When he returned to England, Gosnold promoted the establishment of colonies in the areas he had explored and aided the merchants who secured a charter from King James I of England to colonize Virginia. Gosnold was appointed to command the God Speed, one of three ships that transported English settlers in 1606-7 to Jamestown. In 1607 Gosnold was appointed by the king to the council of the colony. After several months in Jamestown he died of fever.
