I was born on 6 Apr 1938 in Arleta which is now South East Portland Oregon and Raised Sunnyside District, Clackamas. Oregon, family farm. The son of Theodore E Durgan and Ethelwynn Michael of the Great Michael - Myles Coverdale family of England They were Pioneers of Oregon Territory * My Durgan /in Family ** I climbed the family tree and what did I find ?- Rotten limbs and nuts hanging all around so I climbed back down to the roots and what did I find? there all buried beneath the ground!<>Author Unknown..---
I have always been told by my Mother that we were part of the Royal Family of England so I Just had to find out how .and to see if it were true;...
For the last 55 or more Years I have been chasing the Durgin family history all over the world,, A very Historic Family to say the least ****
I was Born 6 April 1938. at about 59th and Foster Road Arleta district Portland Oregon and raised on the Family Farm Sunnyside District Clackamas Oregon.
In 1954 I quit high School, and went to work for The Rock Of Ages Dealer with my brother as a stone setter setting monuments in grave yards all over Oregon ,Washington California and Idaho. We have worked in just about every Cemetery in three States.. we got to see a lot of Country and quaint little towns where ever there was a cemetery.. A lot were pioneer cemetery's that had been there for a hundred years or more. Full of brush and run down , Some of the families owned a plot there for generations ..We used to search for Monuments of Famous People to see if there were any buried there. .That started me looking for ancestors of mine and other people,,been at it ever since. ** I wish To Thank All the Durgins and there relatives that have made this such an adventure and very confusing for the last 50 or so years.**
My Line:
I was born in Arleta which is now in south East Portland and raised on the family Farm Sunnyside District Clackamas Oregon Attended the old Sunnyside grade school at 122nd and Sunnyside Road . Never went to high school much, Had to work in th woods didnt have time for school.
I did not like school anyway,, the closest high School was 7 miles away. Was a hassle to catch the bus every morning for a thirty mile ride all over the country to pick up the students that went to school..
Not many of the Kids around there ever graduated from High school. But then there wasnt many kids either , only thirty in the whole School all 8 grades..this was known as out in the booonies.. People from town always asked if we had any trouble with the indians out here. No indians nothing but dirt, mud and trees very few houses most people owned at least 30 acres some 200 or more..
Lived there for 30 years then moved to Milwaukie Oregon Then to South East Portland where I now live .
We Learned to work hard on the farm at an early age .At age 6, I learned to drive a tractor.I Learned to Sew sacks on a Threshing Machine at age 12.. ,loved to work on those old time machines. became an expert old tractors. Especialy Steam powered ones.
I learned to drive a Model T Ford at age 12 Step on the pedal and go . At age 14 went to work in the Woods as a Cat skinner. awful young for that kind of rough work. but survived and made good money...Also worked for Vancouver Granite setting gravestones in cemeterys during the good weather months..
My father Owned a cord Woodsaw with his brother inlaw Sherwood Michael for many years They started abt 1929 ..Ever winter they traveled all over Portland Cutting slabwood for people for there winter heat . Its a lot of hard work throwing wood all day long....
I Know I ran that saw untill abt 1978 the only left in Portland
.. it was a big day when the woodsaw would come to your house and saw as much as 20 cords in one day ..thats a lot of Slabwood.. The engine was on old Model T Ford on a trailer with a flat belt and a 48 inch saw blade . some of that old growth slabs would realy make the old T engine git down and bark.. what a sound The only thing that sounds better is a steam engine under full load..... it finally became a victim of the times and was scrapped..
In April 1964 I went to work for Hyster Company untill they Closed the Portland plant in 1983..
, I went to work for Weyerhaeuser co. at the big mill in Cottage Grove as there lead Straddle truck mechanic, in three years they shut down the plywood mill and the large log mill and was laid off ..They dont even have the smoke stack left anymore ...worked in the ship yard where I was A forman on Swing shift ..I hated swing shift, quit and Went to work for Pape Cat forklift Division as a field mechanic ,spent many years on the road in a service truck .. Was one of the top rated computer operated lift truck Tecks in the Northwest, Most People think there home computer is hard to fix. They dont know what hard to fix is.
Retired for medical problems in 1998 after 30 years as a ''Heavy Equipment" mechanic,
